When life throws you curves...

"When life throws you curves, use them to your advantage"

By now you should have read the previous post and determined your exact body shape. This post is a full description on what best suits your body shape giving you balanced curves and maximizing on your best assets. Why all this is important? Well, body shapes are all about proportion and fashion is all about making these proportions look their sexiest.

The body shapes that were shown in the previous post shall be classified into five basic ones: the pear, apple, hourglass, rectangle and inverted triangle shapes. Enjoy!

The Pear Shape

The pear shaped woman is heavier on the hips having a slender upper body, smaller waist, and shapely legs. This body shape should concentrate on adding visual weight at the top of their body so that they can balance it out with the heavier bottom part of their body. This can be done using bright coloured or printed tops or those with ruffle or embellished detail. A cardigan, embellished blouse, cropped jacket that stops at the waist, wide scoop necks, boat necklines, one shoulder tops that add volume to the top of your body would make you look great. Dark, medium rise, boot cut trousers (or jeans) with simple stitching and pockets at the back complement the bottom of your body without adding more volume there. A-line skirts that fall softly on the hips also work amazingly highlighting your waist.

The Apple Shape

The apple shaped woman has a circular torso with their bottom half of their bodies and shoulders smaller. Since their bodies are rounded, their goal is to add more structure to it. A structured jacket such as a blazer would work wonders on such body shapes. Wrap dresses or those with assymetrical hemlines help to draw angles across your body. Tops with draped fabrics also work really well. Straight leg or bootleg trousers are good for you as they add a little visual weight to your legs. Dresses which have ruching help to bring an illusion of a smaller waist or flat tummy creating an hourglass shape. If you have this shape, your aim is to cinch your waist with belts on dresses or loose tops so as to create the illusion of a smaller waist.

The Hourglass Shape

Hourglass body shaped women are the envy of most as they have a balanced body with their shoulder width and hip width similar in proportion set off by a small waist. Their best assets are the balanced proportions of their curves. If you have an hourglass shaped body, you want to play up your curves and embrace your silhouette without giving it all away. Simple tops with thin and lightweight fabrics flatter your upper body. Long and shapely seams that gather at your waist and flare out at your hips give a smooth snug look playing up your curves and contours. Fitted jackets that nip in at the waist and flare out at your hips also work beautifully on your curves. As for the waist and below, pencil skirts, bootleg pants and skinny jeans work very well because they follow your natural curve.

The Rectangle Shape

Rectangle body shaped women appear slender and athletic. (Also known as the column, straight, ruler or banana shaped woman) They tend to go for simple fitted cuts that can make them look even more boxy. If you have this body shape, your goal is to maximise on creating the illusion of curves. Tops with asymmetrical rounded hemlines and ruffle details are amazing on your body as they help to create this illusion. Tank tops with thin and delicate straps help to play down your athletic features helping you look even more feminine. High waist and wide leg trousers look great on you because they add curves to the lower part of your body. Soft and feminine fabrics such as lace or silk or embellished and ruffled apparel look beautiful on you.

The Inverted Triangle Shape

The inverted triangle body shaped woman is busty or has broad shoulders. (Also known as the strawberry, cone or full bust shape) Her legs are well sculpted and she may want to show them off in fitted leggings but this is mostly successful if she pairs it with a long top that reaches right under her bum. If you have this body shape, since you have more body volume at your upper torso you may want to add more volume to the lower half of your body. Go for simple and darker blouses or shirts with simple cowl or deep v-necks and draped fabric to add a little femme flare and minimise the volume on the upper torso. You can easily pull off drop-waist dresses (which many cannot), wide-leg trousers and long skirts that add fullness to your lower body. Flowy and full bodied pants and skirts with light colours work like a charm on your body. Minimise on jewellery at the top wearing simple earrings and necklaces but you can play around with different bracelets and rings to accesorize your outfit. Small clutch bags may amplify your upper torso so carry a bigger handbag or purse at the bend of your arm to add more volume to your lower torso and balance your body out.
